The
Hopi are known for their kachina dolls, the Navajo for their sterling silver
jewelry and the Zuni for their stone fetishes. Zuni sculptors
carve small rock figures of animals, humans, and supernatural shapes, typically
called "storytellers" or "fetishes." Zuni fetishes
feature inlaid eyes and heart lines, and many other interesting accents, such as
a bear with a fish in it's mouth. Zuni Fetishes range from the primitive in
design to very elaborate and detailed and thus so does their value. Price is
usually determined by the Zuni carver, size of the fetish and value of the stone that
it is carved from. People from all over the world collect Zuni fetishes. A fetish is any object believed to have magical power.
Zuni fetishes have
different meanings to different people. For example the way a healer views
a bear maybe different from the way the carver viewed it. The meaning of
fetishes can vary from clan to clan, society to society, tribe to tribe. Each
person has their own personal meaning for a fetish.
