Small standing peace pipePeace pipes

The peace pipe or calumet, was a ceremonial pipe that North American Indians smoked as a sign of peace and friendship. They passed it from one person to another. Among the Indians of the Great Lakes, Mississippi Valley, and Great Plains, this pipe had a stone bowl and a long wooden stem elaborately decorated with feathers. Early French explorers called the pipe and the dance held in its honor the calumet, from their word for the reed that sometimes formed the stem of the pipe. Most Indian pipes were not peace pipes. Indians of many tribes smoked solely for pleasure. Other pipes were used only in religious ceremonies. W. Roger Buffalohead, M.A., Interim Dean, Institute of American Indian Arts, as taken from World Book 1998 Multimedia Encyclopedia.

Our American Indian artifact reproductions are handcrafted by Navajo craftsmen using a variety of  materials such as leather, wood, bone, fabric, dyed turkey feathers, antlers, beads, horse hair and more.  Great attention has been paid to the detail of each quality artifact replica.  All pieces come with a card of authenticity that has the designer's and craftsperson's name and tribe.
